New York, NY — ALEX KUKAI invites you to an exhibition of new works by the artist
in his SKETCHBOOK SERIES show at H.P.F, Christopher boutique in the West Village, New York City.
Beginning in the late 1990’s aboard New York City Transit, the multiplicity of culture
captured Alex Kukai. It produced a spiral of ink in the artist’s signature graphism style.
The sketches illustrate not only urban enclave, but a beehive-like energy.
The project idled until this year. Prompted by conversations with residents and tourists to New York City on their experiential perspectives of the city, the artist drew again. Alex Kukai notes, “As an artist doing this work, I feel like a medium for the city and these drawings.”

Alex Kukai
Ne Alexander Kukai Shinohara, Alex Kukai was born in 1974 in New York City as the first and only child of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara. Upon graduating from the La Guardia High School of Music and Art in New York in 1992, he received a Mark Rothko Award sponsored by the Daily News and Mark Rothko Fund. He moved on to study painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, from which he graduated with a B.F.A. in 1996. Since then, he has shown his work in a number of solo exhibitions and group exhibitions both in Japan and the U.S. In 2009, he was included in New Tale of Our Age, co-curated by Midori Yoshimoto and Aileen Wang, who introduced ten emerging artists in the greater New York metropolitan area at Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit. A versatile artist, Alex Kukai published his comics, including Twilight Comic (2009), and designed a CD jacket for Babamania’s ILNANA. Along with Noriko, he was featured on an online site, TheRealReal.com; in 2014, he was included in Love Is A Roar-r-r-r! Plus One, a one-family exhibition curated by Reiko Tomii for hpgrp GALLERY NEW YORK.
In its catalogue, Tomii wrote: “Alex Kukai is a versatile artist who makes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and comics, among other things. . . . Just like his parents, he is blessed with a graphic gift. Since his childhood, “to draw was to breathe for him,” observes his mother. But what sets him apart from the parents is his “very strong wrist,” in the loving and proud words of his father. His “strength” is amply demonstrated by many of his recent drawings marked by precise and sharp lines. Another factor that distinguishes him in the family is his intimate knowledge of street culture of New York… His work incorporates elements of street art, hip-hop music, and underground culture, … revealing an inspired sense of design imbued with edgy yet often buoyant feelings.”
